In many people the summer now approaching triggers a desire to travel and a longing to go on holiday. And sometimes we forget how much travelling can impact our environment. With a few small tips and tricks, a holiday can promote our personal relaxation and still be gentle on the environment.
A holiday starts with choosing a destination. This mostly includes thoughts on the most suitable means of transport. Catalogues and booking platforms gently offer flights as the very first choice, and not only for long-distance trips. Flights are even suggested for comparably short distances. Anyone wishing to save money on the flight, normally thinks first and foremost of travelling by car. A look at the list of possible train connections usually pays off twice, since the train is sometimes quite competitive in terms of the price. It saves you long check-in-times and above all, it protects the environment.
Maybe you could consider doing with a little less in terms of the distance. You can get the space you so desperately need from the stress of everyday life even at a small distance, maybe even by going on holiday in your own country.
And to make sure that your trip is good for both your relaxation and your conscience, here are another three tips for eco-friendly travelling:
1. Waste avoidance when on the move
To make sure that you are looked after in the best possible way during your trip, it is advisable to pack reusable drinking bottles. And so a lot of plastic waste can be avoided. The same is true for snacks and other foods on the move. To this end, a selection of snacks can be prepared at home and conveyed in glasses or in other reusable containers. And anyone on the move who is buying lunch to go from restaurants, can perhaps transport this in their own containers.
2. Never lose sight of the resources of Nature
Travelling in a sustainable manner also means treating the resources on the site sparingly. Most accommodations give guests the option not to have their towels changed every day, and it always make sense to actively ask for this. Also themes which are a matter of course for many people at home, should not be forgotten when on holiday, such as only using heating and air conditioning sparingly and not letting it run all day long, even when you are absent.
3. Protecting flora and fauna
We all travel to be able to enjoy intact natural surroundings and find rest there. Let’s take care to leave the natural surroundings as we would wish to find them ourselves. Waste has to go into the corresponding collection bins, and if none are readily available or if the waste basket is already full, then we can take the waste home with us and dispose of it properly there. Likewise the selection of lotions for body care and sun protection has an impact on the environment, the right choice often does not have to be too expensive, and clean water in the lake we want to swim in has to be worth paying a few more euros for it.
