Tips for a sustainable day at the office

It does not matter if it is a Start-up, a family-run company, or a multinational  company– each and every employee in a company can design their office so that it is as eco-friendly and sustainable as possible to reduce CO2 and waste. We have compiled a list of valuable tips for you for more sustainability in your company – here comes part 1 of 2.

The route from work to business trips: A day at the office starts with the distance you cover to get to work (and mostly it finished with the trip home). Have you ever thought about leaving your car at home and taking the train, the bicycle, the underground/tram, or – depending on the distance – walking? Another possibility which is guaranteed to save on CO2 is car pooling. The same applies to business trips: think sustainably! Do you really have to take the plane or could the meeting be held as a telephone conference or as a Video-Call? In this way, you can save on the travelling time and gain some extra time for a coffee break.

That first coffee at the office (and the many others that follow): Have you ever calculated how much coffee is consumed every year in your company? Pads and capsules are costly and create a lot of waste. Classic filter coffee with reusable coffee filters, a French press, an espresso machine or even investing in another high-quality fully-automatic coffee machine can be worth it in the long run. If you then also use fair trade coffee from organic plantations, nothing stands in the way of the pleasure of sustainable coffee.

Regional water from glass bottles: Glass bottles are eco-friendly and the water definitely tastes better when it does not come from a plastic bottle. If your water does not have to travel long distances and comes from a regional source, then you save on the CO2-emissions associated with this and the transport costs. If the drinking water in your region is of a good quality, you can of course use a water bubbler and adapt your water to your own taste with flavor drops.

Give your printer a break and introduce paperless meetings: Very often piles of paper are printed out, only to be thrown away a short time later. Printouts (Handouts) can of course be helpful and make a meeting more efficient. However, to save on paper resources, you could revert to your laptop and beamer. Presentations are shown on a big screen or sent by e-mail. An even more innovative idea – and the latest craze – is the use of rewritable notebooks. Here it is a case of: taking notes, uploading them, erasing them and starting from the beginning again.

Food Sharing: Food waste from households is responsible for a large part of the global Food Waste Problem. Is there anyone out there who has not thrown something away which was still good before going on holiday? A useful tip is to set up a „Save Food“ shelf in the fridge of your office kitchen. Attaching a note "please feel free to take this", lets everyone know that they can help themselves as and when they like. In this way, sandwiches and fruit from the last meeting or lunch snacks, left over from co-workers, can be saved. If all the members of staff take part, then together you can reduce Food Waste and introduce some variety to your culinary get-togethers.

Separating waste – so simple: It is so simple to separate waste. It becomes even easier if there are clearly labelled waste bins for each type of waste. Anyone who installs an easily accessible system in the office for residual waste, paper, plastic waste, organic waste, batteries, ink cartridges, deposit bottles, used glass and so on, will undoubtedly be rewarded with a higher recycling rate.

In the best case, most of our tips are already routine practice for you and you are already contributing actively to the improvement of the environment by the responsible way in which you act which is an advantage for a sustainable and eco-friendly world. One thing is clear: #ItsInOurHands – we have to do it!
