Flooded by Plastic
In a clear and shocking manner, the plastic atlas illustrates how gravely our world has been flooded with packaging waste.
Generally, atlases highlight the natural condition of the earth. In this specific plastic atlas, however, the information and illustrations are sobering to say the least. Published this year for the first time, the plastic atlas, throughout its 50 pages, explains the problems surrounding plastic. In as little as 65 years, between 1950-2015, the world has produced over 8.3 billion tonnes of plastic. For our modern world, in which a lot of commodities are enjoyed „to go“, more than 1.13 billion plastic pieces from food and drink packaging were produced in 2018. A lot of the packaging ends up in oceans, pollutes the long stretches of the coast, and pollutes the habitats of myriads of creatures and organisms. Thus in the year 2050, the amount of plastic waste swimming around in our waters is expected to be three times the number of fish living in our oceans.
Anyone who supports the „Break Free From Plastic“ movement and implements the movement’s goals into their own everyday life contributes to limiting the rising dangers represented by the environmental pollution caused by plastic waste accumulation. In concrete terms, it is a question of getting to the root of the problem and no longer having to deal with the question of how to dispose of plastic since plastic-free alternatives are being used. The long-term goal should be to completely avoid plastic and to curtail the extent of the resulting troublesome environmental pollution issue caused by plastic use.
