Problem - plastic beaches

The summer, the sun, beaches and the sea – this is an image many of us have of the ideal holiday on a lonely island, surrounded by natural splendor. Against this ideal backdrop, what could there possibly be to complain about? But where there is light, there is darkness, a darkness not immediately apparent in the holiday photos and the media.

Away from the tourist beaches, there is something to which you will always bear witness: enormous quantities of carelessly discarded plastic rubbish. As if it was a perfectly normal thing to do, empty plastic bottles, plastic bags and other plastic packaging is quite simply abandoned. Sadly, this way of dealing with plastic waste is not rare. For many people it has, in the meantime, become normal to simply dispose of their waste in the environment. What follows is the opposite of idyllic: mountains of carelessly discarded waste, tons of plastic in bushes and roadside ditches – plastic on every corner, plastic as far as the eye can see.

A Start-Up collects waste

The „Ocean Mata“ start-up is confronting this problem in a very unconventional way. The founders sell sustainably produced and bio-degradable Smartphone-covers and cases. They offer an eco-compatible alternative to the other covers mainly produced from oil-based products. And as if that were not enough: with every purchase made, the company guarantees in return to collect at least 1 kilo of plastic waste in nature! Once again, it is in our hands to make the right choice and make a contribution two times over towards the reduction of plastic waste – #itsinourhands.
